It has been a busy Monday in the Go world. In Japan Cho U is fighting for his survival in the 4th Honinbo title match. At the same time in Korea, Lee Changho is facing the challenge from the rising star Ok Teukjin in the Wangwi tournament (Lee beat Ok). But the most exciting game is from China -- a 'mirror Go' between Yu Bin 9-dan and Wang Lei 4-dan.
Mirror Go has been popular in Japan many decades ago. One of the top Japanese player Fujisawa Hosai 9-dan regularly used this tactic when holding white. But I have never seen such a game in major Chinese tournaments before.
The game is from the 3rd round of Chinese Mingren tournament, with Wang Lei 4-dan playing white. Yu Bin 9-dan used a typical solution to tackle the challenge -- making ladders towards the tengen point. Wang had to stop mirroring at move 86. The rest of the game cannot be intepreted using common sense with all those double-ataris left on the board. At a moment, Wang removed a 22-stone dragon from the board. But surprisingly this was not enough for him to win. The game ended in the victory of Yu Bin with the smallest possible margin in Chinese rule (3/4 stones).
