China-Japan Agon Cup

Overview: 

This is a bilateral competition between the Japanese and the Chinese Agon Cup winners. It was first held in 2000, shortly after the completion of the 1st Chinese Agon Cup. Japanese Agon Cup has a longer history.

Tournament Format: 

A single game between the Japanese and the Chinese Agon Cup winners.

Prize Money: 
Winner: 5,000,000 JPY; 2nd place: 2,000,000 JPY.
Time System: 
30 seconds per move. Each player can go beyond 30 seconds 10 times.
Ruleset and Komi: 
Chinese or Japanese rules, 7.5 or 6.5 points komi depending on in which country the tournament is held.
Key Players, Events and Statistics: 
  • Gu Li, Cho U and Iyama Yuta are the most frequent participants, each played 4 times.
  • China had a winning streak of 12 years which was only broken recently.
  • Games are held in either December or January. The year column in the historical results table below is adjusted to reflect the year in which the main Japanese and Chinese Agon events are held. The 2003 one was held significantly later due to the SARS pandemic.
