[Tournament Information] China Korea Friendly Exchange

January and February are traditionally the least busy time for professional Go players and there are fewer major tournaments. It is probably for this reason that back in January 2012 a special tournament was arranged between China and Korea. This is repeated in 2013. The tournament is rather informal and has no sponsor. Korean players have to pay their own expenses travelling to Beijing. Nevertheless many top Korean players do choose to participate, including Park Jungwhan, Cho Hanseung, Kang Dongyun and some of the best new stars like Shin Jinseo and Shin Minjun. The host of course also sends its best players to compete.

I've already seen some very interesting games like this one:

This is a very exciting event

This is a very exciting event (played on 44 boards!), the eight round just finished. Do you know what are the time limits for a game and how many rounds are left?

I saw the overall results after the fourth round, and with the exception of the second round when the Chinese players dominated, the other rounds where even. But considering the top boards results from the 5-8 rounds, it seems that China is now in control?

The tournament just finished.

The tournament just finished.

Morning games (round 1/3/5/7) are faster with 45 minutes reserved for each side and 30 seconds byoyomi (each side can go beyond 30 seconds twice); Afternoon games: 1 hour each side and 1 minute byoyomi. Chinese rule set used.

The final score is China 197, Korea 155. Korea did well in the first 4 rounds and lost steam afterwards. This is to be expected: every one of the 44 Korean player had to play 8 games in 4 days, they must be exhausted; on the other hand the Chinese side was allowed to use more players (89 in total).
